Celebration
of the Christian Mystery : Sacraments
PREVIEW
OF SESSION TWELVE
"SACRED
TIME & SACRED SPACE: HEAVEN ON EARTH"
There is something to the
commercial of the Rolex watch company that says its products are not
timepieces but chronometers. Only timepieces that are approved by
the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute may use the term
chronometer, at least in Switzerland. This information may help
us distinguish chronos from kairos, key concepts in
Session 12, “Sacred Time & Space: Heaven and Earth.”
Both chronos and kairos
mean time in Greek, but in different ways. Chronos is the
time we measure with a timepiece – the second, minute, hour, day, month, and
year. Kairos, on the other hand, is an event in the progression of
time like, for example, the time when an ice storm kept most people in the
metroplex from work for four days. Of course, the principal kairos
events for Christians have to do with the salvation achieved by Jesus
Christ’s, especially his death and resurrection.
Session 12 examines how Christians
celebrate Christ’s salvific work by discussing in a general way who, how,
when and where of the sacraments.
